Autumn Term at Eco Club

Lately we have had a visitor Elsa and she is from the University of Bath. She will be working with us to see how being in Eco club has any benefits for us, like increasing our solving problem skills and working in groups. We're looking forward to seeing what we can learn from her too.

This term we made a start on our environmental audit of the school.  We went around the school and made a map of the areas of the school that are good and bad for the environment.  We realised that we don't have many flowers.  We do have lots of trees and this is good because they are habitats for wildlife.  We have also had Gaynor, from the Young Person's Trust for the Environment, come into school to work with the year 2,3,4, and 6 classes on what we like and could improve about the school grounds.  Gaynor will work with us for the next three years to make our school grounds even more fantastic.

We are having solar panels being put up on top of our school roof and therefore the eco club have decided to focus on energy this year.  We are researching  solar panels and will be telling the school about these soon.  In our school we are also trying to reduce the energy that we use! Well done for saving energy, Newbridge!

What was Green day like?

Green Day was a big success!
This is a picture of the plastic bottle greenhouse UNDER CONSTRUCTION!

We did all sorts of things on Green Day such as: making bags, making apple juice, making eco banners, seed bombs, apple cooking, and poetry. Here is a picture of one of the eco bags:

If you own this bag and you're reading this, you must be chuffed to bits!
It is the first Green Day that Newbridge has had!

We hope to do this every year, as it was very very fun!

We hope you all had fun on green day!

And from environment club, a big Thank-you! for joining in and having fun!! ;-)

Newbridge Eco Club gets underway!

The brilliant Newbridge eco club is now open!!

At the moment we have been thinking of ways to get people to come. We have also been mentioned in the school newsletter! Click here to see!

The most important thing we have been doing at the moment is working on our eco code. If you want to find eco information, the board near the staffroom will be the school eco board soon!

Why should I join eco club?

The reason why you should join eco club is because it helps you to become more environmentally friendly. It would also help your parents to become more environmentally friendly. And most importantly...

IT'S FUN!

Who can I talk to?

You can talk to Miss Malone 4m, Theo, Tommy, Cara and Tom who are all in 4m.

Join eco club today!

Parents Go Green

At school last week the energy team held a parents meeting which lots of parents attended! In this meeting we explained all about what we have done in the past few months and what they could do at home to save energy.

Some of the things YOU could do are:
  • Keep lights off in the day ( it’s light so you don’t need them on).
  • When you boil your kettle make sure you boil only as much water as you need. (Did you know your kettle uses 20 times as much energy as your TV! It's one of the most energy greedy things in your house!) It saves you water and energy.

If you do this it could save you up to £250 a year!!!!!

In the parents meeting we handed out different leaflets and a poster for all the parents! Kathy Tate, B&NES Sustainability Officercame and explained how the council can help YOU to save energy. We also showed the film which we also showed to the KS2 and our demonstration of what happens if you don’t save energy!

The upper school are still doing really well saving energy and now nearly every class have won the golden light bulb at least once. Now we're focusing on reducing our electricity use in the upper school week on week. Have you seen our arrow and posters in the crush hall? have a look and see how we're doing this week.

5L snatch the golden light bulb by 1 point

This week the golden light bulb went to 5L by 1 point - it was really close. We are now going to be doing more checks so watch out for us and turn your lights off because we could check any time.
Lately the energy team have decied to have a parents energy session. The reason we have decided to have a parents energy session is that everyone in the energy team said that their parents are not the best at turning off lights.
If you want to save energy at home WATCH THIS SPACE! Details coming soon.

Recently the Energy Team have been doing lots of exciting things such as being on the radio, being in the newspaper and being on the news. We all went to the Guild Hall where we showed other schools what we have done so far, we even showed the film we made! We were also presented with a certificate by the Counciler Gerrish. We've proved our point and now the school are saving it really well! We need to continue though and we are going to hold a parents meeting soon so we hope you can come..... for further details they will be in the newsletter soon!

White paper recycling

Hello from the White Paper Team.
(The white paper team are working hard to collect all the used white paper in the school so that it can be recycled.)

As you may have known, there are three bins - one for rubbish (small black), one for white paper (big metal one in the lower school and a short green one - in the upper school) and one for coloured paper (cardboard bin in lower school and upper school) - but some of the bins aren't as good as we would like. Once we found rubbers, pens and sharpeners in a white bin! White paper that we would like in the white paper bins are things like newspapers, backing paper, border paper, plain white paper, paper with writing on and paper with paint, pens or pencils on. If you have anything but the paper listed in your bins we will not take it!

Energy Team

The Energy Team kicked things off last term and have been busy trying to make the school a greener, more energy efficient place ever since.

After spying on the Junior School energy behaviour and measuring how much energy we were using in Term 1, we sprang into action after half term.

We put up lots of signs and posters all around the junior building, reminding people to turn electrical equipment off and giving top tips on saving energy.

We spoke to people that could help us - Mr Courtney, Kay the cleaner and Mr Croker. We made a fantastic film and showed it to the whole of KS2 and we explained to them how making electricity actually causes lots of pollution and heats the whole world up.

We've kept measuring how much electricity the junior school's been using. If you're interested in finding out how much, take a look at the OWL monitor in the library. It will also tell you how much greenhouse gas we've produced and how much money we've spent on electricty since we set the monitor up.
